Tales of interference and authoritarianism at AAU

(By Roha)
When Professor Andreas Eshete was controversially appointed to Addis Ababa University’s top position, the university community was split down the middle. There were teachers and staff members who were willing to give him a chance. Certainly, his reform noises were strong. Six years before his appointment, he had made a remarkable and well-received speech, advocating drastic change in this great institution of higher learning. When he took office, he eloquently outlined his vision for the university, making promises that under his leadership it would reach the dazzling heights the university had climbed in the 1960s and beginning of 1970s. He promised to ensure academic freedom; he openly flirted with the idea of introducing a university charter which makes it independent of government interference; he planned to change the skewed teacher-student function curve in favor of a student-centered teaching-learning. Some argued that he had the wherewithal to put together university policy and strategy to execute his reform agenda. There were, however, a number of community members who believed his promises were just empty waffles, and basically he was a political appointee.

Alas, those who braced themselves for audacity were disappointed. Andreas’s leadership has become arguably the most stagnant and discombobulated in the past 20 years. Five years into it, four characters typify the administration.
-Unprecedented central authority, direct interference in academic and administrative affairs from the president and his cohorts
-Proliferation of lame institutes and official positions
-Extraordinarily declining quality of education, teachers and students
-Lack of transparency

I will deal with the first today.

If part of what makes an institution is its transcending individuals, Addis Ababa University has ceased to be one. It has rule books which are flouted as a rule of thumb by the president. Decisions of faculty academic commissions are rescinded if the president doesn’t like them. Professor Andreas interferes in the minutest details of the university’s administration, making haphazard and unpredictable decisions.

Two years ago, a senior English literature student failed to register for the second semester. When she appeared for the final exams, she hadn’t attended a single class in the same semester. Her department barred her from sitting on exams based on the university’s rules. Andreas Eshete ordered the department to reverse the decision. The student took the exams and graduated.

If that surprises you try to understand this. Harold Dorsey, an affable African-American, applied to teach at the Law Faculty, claiming that he has his J.D. from an American University. Andreas Eshete instructed the law faculty to hire him as Assistant Professor. The faculty insisted that as a first professional degree J.D.is equivalent to LL.B and Mr. Doresy couldn’t be hired as an Assistant Professor if he had no publications. Samuel Assefa, now the Ethiopian Ambassador in Washington, wrote a letter of rebuke to the faculty, lampooning the faculty administration’s lack of knowledge about the status of Mr. Dorsey’s degree. He said it is equivalent to PH.D. Dr. Samuel was an advisor to the president.

Yet Mr. Dorsey couldn’t even show his J.D. When he was asked to provide evidence of his degree, he claimed he had unintentionally burned it with rubbish. Andreas ordered the faculty to hire him nonetheless. He was taken on board with a promise that he would produce the document in the future. For two and half years, he taught law at the university without a document. The faculty pushed him to provide one several times. Each time, Andreas intervened letting Mr. Dorsey of the hook. Finally, even the president was embarrassed that his friend couldn’t produce what he had been asked and the teacher was fired.

Perhaps, the area the president interferes in most is student placement. The university is replete with Stories of students who, despite not fulfilling the university’s admission requirements, have been placed in one of its many faculties. Recently, there was a controversy about the nursing student at the Medical Faculty who hadn’t even completed grade 10. Faculty members of Institute of Language Studies recount same stories. In the Department of Sociology, where I once studied, teachers told me that registering unqualified students with the instruction of the president happens a lot. School of journalism may be the worst offender. I used the word offender because the school’s director, Dr, Abiy Ford has been a willing accomplice in the undertaking. In one case, a man who wasn’t even the university’s student was sent to Columbia school of journalism on a scholarship which was given by the University of Columbia for university members.

But in the ability to shock, all of the stories couldn’t beat what Addis Ababa University community called the Dagne saga. Dagnachew has been Campus Police Chief for the past five years. Many students claim that he triggered the June 6, 2005 university protest by beating two students for no reason. Three years ago, Dagnachew applied to the Law Faculty’s Extension Diploma Program. He needed ESCLCE GPA of 3.0. He had 1.8 and the faculty decided that he couldn’t join. Andreas intervened on behalf of Dagne and ordered the faculty to accept Dagnachew on probation. In the first semester of his freshman year, he got a GPA of 0.4 which wouldn’t enable him to continue. Again, Andreas came to his rescue and Dagnachew was allowed to march on. After that the police chief, who has also been member of the university’s disciplinary committee, had been caught twice while trying to steal exam papers. No measure was taken against him.

Of course, Andreas’s disregard of academic norms and administrative rules couldn’t hide the fact that he had his way because of the incompetent yes-men at the helm of faculties and departments. That makes it even more troubling.

I completely agree with the above comment. I was once a graduate student in the medical faculty. The president has interferred in the decision of the departments with regard to academic matters involving weak (incompetent ..!) students. Some are going to be specialists..and instructors in different universities ....I wonder what they will be ? What type of students they are going to produce?
Dear freinds of Ethiopia these guys are killing a generation.

Selam Roha

Thank you for the information.
For those who know Prof Endirias, this should not come as a surprise. I know he is also heated by even his close relatives.

The extent of the destruction he has brought to the university is simply sickening.
Shame on him, sham on those forces of destruction.

Please continue to write and expose him to the world.

In solidarity

I extend my gratitude to all the EZ family. Keep up the good fight. Thanks.

I was a graduate studnet at the 4 kilo compos and i witnessed Endreas ordered the deparment head and the instructor to revereve a failed student's grade and give him another exam. And that student used to hand in empty papers during exam times.

Selam Roha,

Thanks for the article. Please keep it up. We should let the whole nation know the crimes being committed against AAU by Andreas Eshete and his stooges. There will come a day he will answer for all the mess he is creating. In the mean time, let us continue to expose him. Don't underestimate the power of blogging.

hmmmmm, we were told to believe students protest of 2005 election results instigated the violence.

Inadvertently, you let slip an important fact we were never aware.

Oh!!! I like the issue at hand as i think it is really a burning issue.

I just want to add some about professor Dowrsy. To your surprise he also thought graduate students with his alleged first degree which he failed to prove it ultimately. What a shame. The LLM students are already graduated and their trascript says they have taken a course which they practically didn't. In the first place Mr dowrsy doesn't seem to have a slightest idea about law. What he always did in class was ask for students opinion. when asked by students, he always refer to the readings he gave and finally says this is the opinion of the writer.Never had his own position.

Any way, this is how the university is running its graduate schools. And the president, i believe, is the primary person to take the blame for all the messes around.

Thanks Roha for initiating this discussion. From my knowledge about the AAU, what you posted is just a preview of Andreas' hall of scandals.

I think, I have more to say, but would prefer to bring it up if it is not covered by your remaining posts.

Good job dude,

I just wanted to give you some more leads to investigate:

1. Dr. Abiy was paid more than 50,000 Euros for networking AAu's registrar, a work which was done by the folks at the computer centre of the university

2. Andreas instructed the registrar to register a former law school who was caught red-handed with a stolen book from the law library and who was later on suspended for a year by the faculty's honour board. What is surprising is that girl now works as the personal assitant to andreas.

3. Andreas collected his salary for more than a year from the university despite the fact that he was not rendering any service to the university. this was done by a specific instruction of ex-minister of education, Genet.

Go and try to verify these leads. I will give you some more interesting leads.

good luck

Are you guys surprised by these? These are not problems for people who are actually experiencing them. The university is really in an oweful condition. But first of all, I am grateful for such a forum. The university, if we can call it as a university at all, is not more than a political institution. We know that this has happened for a reason. Much could be said.... And thanks to this blog, we will say it now. Trust me, I have hundreds of problems that I will expose. I believe that change doesn't come out of a blue sky, we need to get into it. I will see you soon with the some topics.

Thanks Roha for this blog. Saving the AAU is a very timely issue. I just have one concern.

Based on past trends, I'm sure that it will be just a matter of time before the blog is banned in Ethiopia. So far, I don't think the authorities have discovered it yet and for today, we at AAU can access it. But can you point us alternative entry points to this blog, while we still can access it.

Keep up the good work!

selam,

yasa gmatu kanatu! You should start looking at the debacle in AAU starting at Andreas Eshete.

Do you know Andreas was an adjunct professor (a part time instructor) in the USA before he sold his soul to the devil to join InterAfrica group? Ask why a man who has PHD from Yale in the mid 70s will be a part time instructor bumming beer and cigaretes from the Parkig lot attendants in Philadelphia?
Andreas braggs always he has taught in Ivy League (Top Notch)US universities. It is true he did so, but he was never able to attain TENURE in any of them. He looks good on paper, so they let him in. They find out he is a worthless bum who does not have the discipline to do any serious work. So they deny him tenure, he moves on. The last place he was on tenure track was University of Pennsylvania. In the mid 80s they declined him TENURE. He hang out as an Adjunct Faculty till he moved back to Ethiopia.

It has been 30+ years since he had his PhD from Yale, look at what he produced by way of publication in peer reviewed journals.
Basically Andreas was not even an Associate Professor ( that requires tenure) when he claimed to be a Professor!! He has not even run a section of a department before he became AAU President!!

So what do you expect when they put a habitual drunk who has NO experience in managing anything to run a large university like AAU?

Pray for AAU,
an Alumnus

lemme also add that Andreas has not published any thing-which is a true mark of a scholar. Like most fake ethiopian scholars he just drinks and flirts in bars. I was searching on google if there is anything ever this guy published, nothing!! That is a shame really. In many countries the rule is "publish or perish" and this guy has died an intellectual death long ago-only he got rescucitated b/c he politicized himself and lend credence to politicians by his endless speeches and presentations (which do not count academically since they are not peer reviewed). This guy has particularly caused heavy damage on the Law Faculty. I hope it will not be long before Law Faculty instructors and currewnt dean and former dean say something about the blunders committed by the prof.

Thanks Roha.

In the early days of the TPLF rule, Meles attacked the Addis Ababa University as a chauvinist institution – an adjective which followed Professor Asrat to AAPO and now has become the tag for the Amharas. Since those days, he has never failed to repeatedly and openly show his disdain for the institution.

I personally do not have great expectations from an individual who spent most of his life including his teenage years running around with a gun and killing people to promote the idea of breaking Ethiopia in to pieces, which he partially followed through (talk about treason!). Neither do I expect high quality leadership from his appointees like that burnt-out professor Andreas, who never held a consistent and progressive professional life.

The sufferings and brutalities that are being inflicted on both the students and the faculty of the Addis Ababa University are open facts that need no proof. As the main outlet for independently thinking intellectuals of the country, the failure of the university is the failure of all.

Dear Roha and Zagol,

What a wonderful initaive !!! Well it will take generations to detail the bad deeds of Indrias and Co. Just to add some more inputs under the topics mentioned: Indrias and Samuel hired their good friend by the name "Heruy Arefayne", who was working in the AAU reform office with out any qulaifications what so ever in the area. He has got some studies in literature but it is a known fact that he didn't even finish his first degree. He is a smart guy but with no concenteration and also very known for not delivering his assignments. He is hired just because he is a good friend of Indrais, Samuel and his wife Aster. What do you except from a person who is alcoholic, and famous adulterous in town.

Anonymous said...

talking about hiring close friends, I should add that the person who is currently a legal advisor to the university (Mebratu) is a very close friend of the ever drunk and chat chewing andreas. Guess how much Mebratu is making as a parttimer? an astounding 6,000 birr/month while a fulltimer at the law school of the same uni. makes less than 2,000/month.

can someone make sense of this?

some one rightly said that we can not list down all the ill deadds of andreas and co. But just to add one bit to the already long list:

andreas had instructed the current law school dean, tadesse, to give an interview to ETV and Eth. Radio saying that the findings of the 'independent' inquiry commission on the death of more than 190 people following the may 2005 election. to the jubiliation of most of us at the faculty, the dean said NO WAY!

Greetings to all:
I was once a grad student @AAU. During that time the criteria to join AAU was really very tough and I can assure you it was not based on your political affiliation rather on your acadamic merit. But now things have been changing. These guys who would have changed the AAU in a postive way happened to serve their political masteres. I am really afraid whom we Ethiopians can trust. These guys being educated abroad atleast contribute better than the local Academecians. 'cos atleast they have some western education background. I have also confirmed Yoha's accusation during my summer stay in Addis. It is really frustrating if you happen to talk to recent AAU's graduates. Really our education is getting worse and worse. We need a remedy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"If GOld Rests what shall Iron Do"
While the country itself is on danger, why do you expect some thing good on the education?? is it not like execting honey from fly? Meles has really enough time to read our posts. He must be now thinking to close all the universities so that we will talk for a week or two and then stop like politics.

Roha,

Thank you for the info. You're telling us a heart-breaking story about the institution of learning some of us had graduated from. The Dergue was resented for its denial of academic freedom. Obviously things have gotten much worse. Unfortunately, I do not see a solution to the problems at AAU (and other colleges)without us resolving the political paralysis our country is suffering from.

God Bless U!

One more thing that we shouldn't not forgot is that, in those days when Eritrean were enjoying the benefit of having two countries for themselves, Endrias went on a Ethiopian TV to defend forcible of expulsion of Ethiopians from Eretria. I think, unpatriotic person shouldn't be a director such an institution in the first place.

To save AAU

It was with great interest that I read your piece “Tales of Interference and authoritarianism at AAU.” You start out your observation by stating that when Andreas was appointed to lead AAU there were some among the faculty and staff who were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt if you will. I say why and based on what? Just because Andreas spent a lion’s share of his adult life in the U.S.? Andreas to my knowledge never held a leadership position in any institution of higher education in the U.S. Having several years of teaching experience does not necessarily qualify one to lead an institution. Presidents must earn their job. They have to pay their dues as department chairs, deans, provosts, Vice Presidents, usually of academic affairs, before they are even considered for the CEO position. I guess Mr. Meles handpicks his yes men regardless of qualifications

I am surprised that there were some in the university community who expected anything from Andreas’ leadership. A good leader by definition is a coach and as such needs to have the respect of his team members. Given the way Andreas was brought to the leadership position and the lack of his higher education leadership experience were to strikes against him from the get go. So much for being a change agent!! It is exactly because he does not have the respect of the faculty and staff that he resorts to the type of unethical/unorthodox management techniques that he resorts to get things done. As a college administrator I find his behavior, as you described it, appalling. Where I sit these are infractions that will lead to the immediate dismissal of any administrator. Above all, if any of the things you described were committed, say at my institution, the accreditation body would put us on probation in heartbeat.

Why is the faculty allowing this imposter to trample all over their academic freedom?

P.S. Abiyi R. Ford as far as I know does not have a PhD. His highest degree is an MFA from Columbia (1971).

What do we expect from political appointees(power appointees)? Be it in Meles-Ethiopia or Bush-America? Be it to a higher educational or financial institute? Just look at the parallel the appointment of Wolfowitz as a president of world bank by president Bush!! And imagine the scandals his in!!!, with in 2 years of his stay in the institution!!
At least he is told by his deputy to quit or resign in his face and he was asked by his senior staffers “WHICH PART OF RESIGN YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND?”

Hello Rohas! This is an excitng beginning. I firmly believe that the whole problem in AAU, or for that matter any institution in Ethiopia, is directly linked to the political and democratic systems in the country. For example, in a political system where socio.economic activities and political activities are merged fully like ours, Endreas and his down liners can never perform political free activities. That is why all institutes currently set up in AAU are made to serve short term political interests. So please all Ethiopians intensify your struggle for a better political sytem and governance where rule of law, accountability, free thought and related essential values flourish. In doing so try to make every Ethiopian part of the struggle with out regard to her age, educational status, ethinicity, and color.
Wishing you happy week end. Keep up good deeds!!
I am an advocate of Ethiopianism!!

Look at the top of the page in the following link: You will see Andreas was reappointed for one terminal year as Assistant Professor. http://www.archives.upenn.edu/primdocs/upa/upa1_1/80s/19840120a.pdf
Why did Upen renew his contract for one final year, Andreas was denied tenure!
Also note his title was an Assistant Professor when he left UPENN tenure track in 1985. I do not know how he can be appointed full Professor at AAU few years later skipping the Associate Professor rank.( The years in between he was an Adjunct professor at UPenn)

Hi All:

I want to thank Roha who's started this blog discussion about AAU, apropriately called, Save AAU!

I'll join this blog for more active discussion in the days to come when I've time, which I do not now.

A few things on Andreas Eshete: I'm not defending him, nor his appointment nor am I politically motivated to say what I want to here.

If anyone responds by identifying me with this group or that, I'll simply feel sorry for such a person since that person is wasting his/her time. Im sharing my considered, and independent thoughts on whatever I share and I want to see just some good reasons to show me that I'm wrong when I am. No name calling, no hand waving, no bad reasoning and no fallacies please, we've ever had a chance to have been even moderately educated, at AAU or elsewhere.

I know Andreas Eshete, personally. Not much though. I talked to him about his plans for the AAU when he was appointed/became the AAU President some years back. I went to his office with some plans--to suggest out of concern for the future of AAU-- to make the future of AAU better, and to my surprise he was working on most of them when I shared from the list I had then. I've been away from home for a while and have not followed what he's been doing until I read this blog discussion though I heard here and there bits and pieces about AAU in general.

Yes, Andreas was not a full professor when he left for Eth. from what I've found info on his academic bio from various places, which I do not remember right now where. From my conversations wih him and his academic bios I've seen I remember his being a visiting assistant professor of philosophy at such universities as UCLA, Brown, UC-Berkely,Harvard, and he was an Assitant Prof, and I think an Associate Prof. of Philosophy at UPenn. He also taught at his alma mater, Yale U.

Being able to teach philosophy at the above institutions is one of those rare accomplishments for any Ethiopian whether that person was tenured tracked or not. Ethiopians who've earned doctorates in philosophy from any Ivy League schools are not even three as far as I know.

I can say a lot why a person does not sometimes get a tenure-track teachig position in the US that might explain perhaps something why Andreas was not a tenured tracked professor then. As to how he became a full professor in Ethiopia that I do not know. Anyways he's enough publications before his return to Eth that I would think was more than enough for the AAU to promote him to a full professrship. These are things we can double-check before saying all those things we say about a person. I'm only concerned about truth and that is it.

Finally, I'd like to see some of us who discuss Andreas here to come up with better plans for the future of AAU and submit them to Andreas and whoever you think is the right person and let's do something about AAU, to save the future of AAU. On my part I've tried some things before and am doing something now which I do not need to talk about now and will be actively involved in shaping the future of AAU in the years to come.

Hope the above helps in some way as a contribution.

Look forward to reading more contributions.

The last anon poster seems to have missed the point of many of the comments. People are not discussing Andreas' credintials and character just to mudsling. But it goes to the root of the issue; his competence to lead our AlmaMater at this critical time. Two of these things are his credibility and his experience in higher education leadership. In both accounts he has none. You can not say he has a vision, he does not hav much sober moments for reflection.

He was on Ethiopian TV to insult the Faculty saying they can not go anywhere since noone wants them!!

You claimed he has enough publications to be a full professor. By whose standard? Can you post the list of his publications on peer reviewed journals, hope you based your statement on facts.

Do you know how hard it is at AAU to be a full professor? Compare him to Dr Messay Kebede who has published books, papers etc.

You invited everyone to work with Andreas. It is hilarious, to do what?

Anonymous said...

Hi again:

Thanks for the post on my comments, about Andreas that the last commentator thinks has simply missed the point of many of the comments on te discussion here.

Granted. I was responding to some of the posts that one can see which I was responding to and see if what I've said was irrelevant. It could be to some but not to all posts.

As for Andreas' lack of credibility and experience in higher education leadership I can't say much now. It'd be good for those of us who're discussing these isseus who among the AAU past presidents had previous experience in higher education before his presindetial days. I do not know much and someone can educate me on that to see if Andreas is an exception, which I do not know.

Next, I do not have references to all of Andreas' peer-reviewd publications I said these earlier:

"Anyways he's enough publications before his return to Eth that I would think was more than enough for the AAU to promote him to a full professrship. These are things we can double-check...". I can begin to refer to some of his publications such as:
Eshete, Andreas. "Contractarianism and the Scope of Justice," Ethics , 85, 1 (October 1974), 38-49";

"Does a Lawyer's Character Matter?" in Postma (1980);

"Character, Virtue and Freedom" in Journal of Philosophy (1983).

The above are some of his articles that I could track down for a moment. It might help to point out that I know some people in the US who got promotion from an Assitant Professorship to an Associate Professorship with about half a dozen publications. I'm talking about philosophers whom I know in a much closer way. Sometimes it takes several years to work on one good philosophy paper to publish in a peer-reviewed philosophy journals and the list I gave for Andreas was half of what I gave as an example of a philosopher who got promotion to an Associate professorship in a majot US university. I bet Andreas has more than those publications that I could track-down. Since my aim is not to defend his academic success, I do not need to go on about this I think. I was just responding to some of the previous posts.

By the way, I did not invite "everyone to work with Andreas" in my post. Please read carefully before attributing incorect info to another person. You only gave away how much you care about the future of AAU when you dismissed my sincere suggestions saying that was hilarious. I'm sorry for you and for a typical Ethiopian like you.

Hope the above answers some of the questions posted by the last commentor.

Thanks.

Hi Again:

I'm just curios, after sharing the previous post on Andreas' publication, etc as to how many publication in terms of articles or books it takes for an AAU teacher to become an assitant prof, an associate one and also a full professor. Does anyone have any clue that can also be substantiated?

Just curios based on the previous commentators questions to which I assume he/she has a clue or the right answer.

Thanks

Hello All:

I've been looking forward to hearing some responses to some questios I posted earlier, in the last post.

I've been wondering if someone would tell me how much the AAU profs do publications-wise in peer-reviewed jounrnals. I visit-the online the page of - ETHIOPIAN JOURNAL OF
THE SOCIAL SCIENCES
AND HUMANITIES and it still shows publications in 2003 and nothing later than that.

If someone wants to share with us the most producive publishers despite all the odds that go against them and it'd be a source of inspiration for younger academics and researchers to look up to some who can serve as role models. I do not know any and that could simply be my ignorance which I'm not justifying or defending. i'm here to learn from fellow Ethiopians who seem to care about quality education, and things that can contribute to the development of quality education at AAU and elsehwere in the country.

Just have a look at one young Brazilian philosophers home page for staggering number of peer-reviewed philosophy publications mostly highly technical area of philosophy as that. He's only 31 or 32 and he became a full professor in 6 years. He's among some three philosophers I personally know who've become a full professor in only 6 years.

Here's his web site:

http://homepage.mac.com/otaviobueno/index.htm

Do we have any role model like him even among the seasoned academics? 1/4 of his publications in even much easier to get published dsiciplines such as sociology, psychology, law, and history would have have been qtite a tremendous source of inpiration for those who mean to strive to do some good to the future of Ethiopian higher education.

If anyone of you wants to do some good to the future of AAU, justlet's form a collective effort and do something and i'll be the happiest to contribute my share. If need be I'll provide my email address for personal comunications if some want to to contact me that way.

I can't stand reading Ethiopian blog where people sto by just to throw up, as it were, their useless thouhts and brag this and that about their Ethiopian while doig nothing or next to nothing. It's good to dig deeper to find good reasons why we as a society have failed in order to come up with better solutions to overcome our perennial problems in their multiple incarnations. But dwelling on character assassinations, as almost all Ethiopians who appear on blogs for a minute or two do, is doing the greatest disservice theo country they mean to do some good.

In another blog I shared the following with the active participants in a blog that carries some deep concern about the Ethiopian society:

"One more point: some (among us or whoever) might conclude from what I say on and off about the relationship between philosophy and clear, coherent and rigorous writings that I’m trying to make all people to be professional philosophers. If someone thinks that way I should point out right now that nothing could be farther from truth. Absolutely not!

Developing skills in thinking about ideas, articulating and hence communicating ideas and raising objections and responding to objections and carrying such activities in a logically sound way is an ideal thing we ALL OUGHT TO SEEK. Since most of us are not pursuing academic disciplines such as philosophy (that is an example I know best) as professionals I decided to encourage all of us to develop such skills as part of this discussion and for our own personal development beyond this discussion forum.

The skills mentioned above contribute immensely to the development of the intellectual virtues such as love of truth, pursuit of knowledge and understanding and wisdom, being reasonable/rational , being careful and prudent, being open to learn from others and also from one’s past mistakes, and above all seeking an intellectual humility. These are among widely regarded intellectual virtues and we all can tell how much of these virtues we have among fellow Ethiopians. Not much. Not much. Not much. Not much……………………………………

My heart’s desire is to promote such desirable intellectual virtues as part of larger, all-encompassing, virtues of character that is the subject or focus of our discussion so far. I’ve been trying my best to pursue and embody such intellectual virtues as a person and it’s my heart’s desire to want to flourish with other human beings and in this case with fellow Ethiopians and hence the reason that I urge you guys once in a while.

Fortunately or for whatever reason I’m in an academic discipline that promotes some or all of the above intellectual virtues and I do know firsthand how much such virtues are important in the overall development and flourishing of the human person and my intense desire to encourage you all to do something like reading good books (not all books are good books by any means) that are designed to help us acquire some of these virtues etc. None of you need to think about philosophy at all if you do not have some serious interest to pursue it professionally and I do not expect that people, esp., fellow Ethiopians, would simply want and decide to study philosophy professionally; that rarely, if ever happens. I can count all living Ethiopian professional philosophers and that would take me almost less than one minute or so to count all of them.

My desire is for us all to individually and collectively develop skills that help advance this discussion forward as well as benefit all of us develop personally for our own personal flourishing. The point is: choose whatever intrinsically good and desirable MEANS that you can think of to achieve the DESIRABLE, VIRTUOUS END which is, among other things, acquiring intellectual virtues by way of developing some of the skills that I’ve been promoting on and off here. Philosophy is so intimately related to the virtues that I mentioned but it’s NOT the only means to such ends. That I hope clarifies issues."

Any reactions?

Thanks,

P.S.

I do not think that the link I provided works, here's another attempt:

http://homepage.mac.com/otaviobueno/index.htm

If this time it does not work, just google his name, Otávio Bueno, and you'll be able to get to his home page.

PP.S.I'm so sorry for a number of typos in my pots. Normally I can't stand typos and am condemning myself for contributing too many of them to my own post! Next time things will certainly change. I did not do spell-check and that was the reason for making your reading full of typos. Am so sorry again.

Thanks,

Annon was asking for the most producive publishers among Ethiopian Acadamics.
I was the one who mentioned earlier Dr Messay Kebede as a comparison to Andreas. Messay is a philosopher educated in France and one of the people disnissed from AAU in 1993. He was an Associate Professor at AAU when he left.
He is now a full Professor at University of Dayton in USA.
Here is his website:
http://artssciences.udayton.edu/Philosophy/ShowProfile.asp?u=23533K3DMG2&t=Faculty

Just google his name and you will find more publications not listed on his site. Here is one great such paper:

Hi:

Thanks for the info on Messay Kebede. I'm familiar with Messay Kebede and his work and even as I write this, now, I'm about to email him to invite him for some work on philosophy that I'm organizing and putting together for an international conference somewhere for next year.

My question about who the most productive publisher was about those who teach in the country--ethiopia-- if the one who provided the above info has paid attention to my question.

I'd still appreciate if I'd be able to hear something on those who are in the country and publish productively. I'm in philosophy and am pretty familiar with the very few who're in philosophy that I know all or almost all even in person. I'd rather like to hear about other Ethiopian academics in Ethiopia.

Many thanks again,

BTW It will be nice if you sign a pen name to differentiate the many anonymous discussants. I have started to sign Nahusenay.

I am sorry I missed you were looking for Profs in Ethiopia.
The reason I dragged Messay here was to compare him to Andreas.

Hi Nahusenay:

Thanks again for your note. I've a pen name now and you're right in suggesting that I needed one for there are a number of discussants here and telling who is who is really confusing or it'll take some time to figure out. Thanks.

Yes, I was looking for some info about publications by Ethiopian Profs from within the country. If you've any info please go ahead and share with me and others interested in such info.

I'm beginning work on various writing projects (mostly philosophical) and it'll be several years before they see the light of the day. And in the meantime I want to interact with various writings by fellow Ethiopian academics and hence my curiosity about publications etc. I've been away from the AAU community (with which I was pretty familiar)for a while and hence lack latest stories/info as to who's writing on what etc.

Cheers,

Alethia

You know when I was a child, as strange as you can think, all I used to dream was being a professor at AAU. I was born and raised in a small town about 200km from Addis. I graduated from high school but before I joined university in Ethipia, I managed to secure a scholarship in the west. I am still a young man who has a long way to go but even today all I dream and wish is be a part of AAU. Don't ask me why because I don't know why I am so passionate about being a part of that school and I don't know why I am madly in love in the idea of being a professor in Addis but it is a feeling and a desire that have stayed with me for a long time. I sometimes even feel it as if it is my destination. However, when I hear things like this, my hope dashes, I start to think may be, I could never get there because of people like Andrias. May be I will never realize my dream one day... May be just like most Ethiopians, I am meant to be used to florish the white empire...or may be things could change...or may be it is too late....No matter what though, I will never give up but I wish I can when I hear stories like this one...

God help us...

Who is Andreas Eshete?

The launching of saveaau.blogspot.com is timely and commendable - to save this endangered academic institution, Addis Ababa University before it reaches the critical mass of irreversible crime against the youth of Ethiopia. The blogsot hopefully brings the needed attentionby all who have a stake in the well being of AAU. Needless to say that the blog has already elevated the level of the dialogue and in so doing exposed the shady character of our day who seize the headlines for opportunism and political expediency at any cost - ultimately expose those responsible for the destruction of the AAU. Most of all you are enlightening many of us and shade light to the many complex issues of our beloved AAU.

As a one time student at AAU I feel obliged to help expose the truth behind the
current AAU leadership, more particularly the President of the Addis Ababa University, Andreas Eshete - beyond the lies and hypocrisy - that help understand this individual for what he is - opportunist and addict. Along this line, I wish the blog moderator publicly forward the following questions in its entirety to Andreas:

1) Do you have any peer reviewed papers that are published on a reputable Academic Journal? If so name the Journal (not the kind your misinformation officer is refering to). Please do not include the speech or contributions to news papers that are given on the AAU web site!!!

2) As far as those who knew you closely for the last 40+ years, you never had any Tenure Track position while residing in the US, that allow the academic rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor. So Who or which institution bestowed the rank of a Professor on you? Self appointed for convenience? Please note that I do not dignify your lies here!!

3) Ever since you returned to Ethiopia, if you have any dignity left in you, Did you even try to write a paper or manuscript? I know the answer but for the record and to give you the benefit of the doubt (You are busy drinking and soliciting sex on the night spots of Addis)

4) Did you contribute anything to promote Democracy in our beloved Ethiopia? Sucking up to the Woyane doesn't have any semblance of an Educator OR love of a country!

5) Your phoney title with UNESCO a position customized to pay you money for Whiskey OR the patronage appointment of the Presidency of the Addis Abeba University that you are not qualified to lead - How dare you expel 400 Oromo students to please your woyane masters?

Last but not least, the list of his fabricated employment history in the US is mostly a lie - If it was true it could have been verifiable at this age from web based database and information - ofcourse he doesn't have anything to show for it except to tell lies in his bar hopping!
The truth is Andreas never had a tenure track teaching position anywhere in the US - he only had a Part-time or Adjunct Faculty position at community colleges in New Jersey and Philadelphia, which one close friend of his told me an average of one semester every two years or so - so his Title of Professor is bogus. As far as his former friends are concerned he was unemployed most of the time. Infact the person who helped him even secure the part time job at a college was Professor Efraim Yishak (Professor of ancient linguistics and Hebrew at Princeton) for whom Andreas arranged an honorary Doctorate from Addis Ababa University - to pay his gratitude. Whatever Andreas also claims at best is illusion - no papers and no books - what he does best is to drink alcohol and try to mask his guilt ridden life!.

Another dimension to Andreas and his cohorts is that the control of all foreign research money and other project funds, good example is a sixteen million birr Norweigan fund given to AAU to establish a structured program to train people who can end up building Democratic Institutions - like professionals who conduct local, regional and national elections; people who can help create press freedom with the strict responsibilities that come with it; people who can narrow the gaps in the use of the information technology to name a few - but the money was misappropriated mainly for Andreas's trip and excesses to the US and Europe mainly - the leftover money was used by the establishment of the school of Journalism - and most of the money was squandered by Andreas.

selam,
This is a quick response to the anon comment who is Andreas Eshete?

I believe we have to question Andreas' credintials. But it has to be done with facts.
Andreas was a tenure track assistant professor in UPenn from July 1978- July 85. Here is the initial 3 year appointment:
http://www.archives.upenn.edu/primdocs/upa/upa1_1/70s/19780921a.pdf

Apparently he was denied tenure and in December 1983 his contract was extended for a one terminal year. Look at this document: http://www.archives.upenn.edu/primdocs/upa/upa1_1/80s/19840120a.pdf

Your question is valid, how can a person who was never a TENURED professor (which mostly means never achieved the rank of Associate Professor)call himself Professor as he did in 1991?

On publications, Andreas has NO publication in a peer reviewed Journal since 1985.

Hi Nahusenay;

When I read the following, "On publications, Andreas has NO publication in a peer reviewed Journal since 1985" I was wondering as to how you've arrived at such a very strong conclusion, which entails your knowledge of lack of any publication by Andreas since 1985. This claim amounts to 100% certainty that there is absolutely no publication in peer-reviewed journals by Andeas since 1985.

I wonder even Andreas would arrive at such a conclusion about his own publications owing to fallibility of memory if he does not try hard to remember all his publications plus their publication date. I know a philosopher personally who does not remember his own publications and from what you say one can analogously conclude that some of this philosopher's publications do not exist.

I'm just trying to encourage, those of us, the so-called educated fellow Ethiopians (AAU grads (?)) to do a little bit of careful thinking and review our logical or critical thinking courses so that some will not become victims of outrageous mistakes in reasoning and thinking by those who have the courage to post outrageous posts with outrageous claims supported by only ad homenim. This comment is not directed at Nahuseny who's tried to do a little bit better. But let's re-read the rest of the posts by the so-called AAU grads, and one can't help wondering if they do really know how to think carefully and write well, clearly and above all, if they do care for an iota of truth about what they say/write if they mean it too.

Hope that this blog makes some sense. For some who’d wonder whether I'm trying to defend Andreas, if you think thus you're wasting your time and energy. I'm only worried about so many fellow Ethiopians whose thoughts are as deep as half-an inch but their criticisms of whoever they do not like is as wide as an ocean. What a tragic example of educated Ethiopians! No wonder Ethiopia is 2000 years in the past when we’re near the “celebration” for the millennium of tragic history for a nation that kept producing some of us who show the depth of our learning in the posts as we do. So much shame with little recognition for what it’s-shame all the way. Some of such so-called educated Ethiopians are as learned as their parents who've never ever had a high-school diploma. Does someone want to argue and show this writer his claim is wrong? Go ahead and do that please and all those who read will take note of your writings and depth of thoughts. Go ahead.
I propose one solution and am done for now: forget Andreas if you do not believe in his leadership ability, etc and do something for that university if you do really care. That is far, far better than taking delight and joy in attacking a person who, I do not think, cares about whoever says what. Do what you think is best for your beloved AAU. It’s an institution that needs people who do really care about its future. Please stop perpetuating the habitual and never-dying but destructive character trait shared by countless fellow Ethiopians: instead of dong any good, tearing a fellow Ethiopian into pieces and feeling a sense of accomplishment at doing just that. What a great accomplishment! That is partly why we Ethiopians are Ethiopians: the poorest of the poor, the most ignorant, arrogant, proud, jealous of others and bent on destroying the other by whatever means available. Anyone who dares to challenge these claims? Come on and I’ll be there to show us who we truly are. Ethiopians, destined to decay and die as a nation. In virtue of us, alas!

Cheers,

A/V

Hi All:

I wonder if anyone wants to respond to the previous post that sounds too bitter a pill to swallow for a typical Ethiopian mindset.

I wanted to suggest something, if anyone out there cares for such a suggestion anyways. And the suggestion is this, simple yet a real challenge for all of us in going against our deep-rooted habit of unreason that is embellished in ad hominem arguments, if what most write here even rises to a level of such a bad argument.

I assume one thing here: most of those who share their views here are AAU grads or have some concern and mean to show some care about the fate of AAU. If this assumption is reasonable and we can check to see its being reasonable by reading most of the comments on this blog by those who claim to show their care about AAU or their having been past students of AAU. That is enough to substantiate my claim and I'm open to being proven wrong if what I assumed is wrong.

Assuming what I say is true for the sake of argument, at least, why not we truly show, not in the sense of showing off, by any means, how much we care about AAU instead of dwelling on the story of AAU as a one-man show, Andreas's, as it were, and move on with better ideas and visions for the future of AAU.

Granted AAU's leadership under Andreas is a failure, perhaps a disastrous one at that. True. What should WE then do to reverse the ill--conceived direction of our beloved AAU as some would want to say?

The much better or the best thing for us to do is to stop spending our precious time trying to track down Andrea's past, his success and failure, and do something that is better than what he's done. In order to do that better ideas should be proposed for AAU lovers and those who truly mean to care for AAU's future.

ONLY IF we do such a thing as I'm proposing or something that is better than such a proposal would I take anyone here with some degree of confidence and seriousness. Otherwise, why should I spend a minute of my time reading trash and rubbish "thoughts" about rubbish stories about this person or that? Let's rise to a level of debating ideas, worthy ideas at that. As a society we've a long, long way to go in order to learn how to think about ideas apart from people (gossiping professionally and perpetually even in the name of those who mean to save the AAU!)

When are we going to see ideas being discussed and debated leaving behind thoughtless and mindless character assassination, sickening ad hominem ( I hope that those who know informal fallacies would love the Latin).

I'm craving, most of the time in vain, to see my people discuss ideas and debate ideas and cultivate and nurture their minds that are meant to entertain profound ideas that have profound consequences for our nation's destiny.

When someone shows up here only to perpetuate the habitual ad hominem, I'll draw out all the mistakes in that person's posts and show, to all who care for the future of AAU, what we're doing in the name of saving the AAU. We might end up showing off, as it were, our own failures and ignorance, irony of ironies. Imagine our children, if they be any better in virtue of their being our children (!!!), reading these blogs a generation later and how much they would be ashamed of us as I'm already multiple times. I was once at AAU myself and would like to do whatever I can to contribute to its future. I'm craving to see even a handful of genuine fellow Ethiopians who do really care and also do something to AAU to that effect! Forget one person’s failure or if anyone wants to talk about that person’s failure let’s do that with an open mind to learn from his mistakes and do something better. He, the he here could refer to Andreas, would, I hope love to see someone desiring to do something better and DOING IT! Show me by doing something better than Andreas’s or whoever your favorite subject for blogging habits is and challenge me to believe you. I assure you that nothing short of good arguments based on good reasoning would convince the likes of me. I’m a skeptic that most of what has been said here is not true. Show me that most of what has been said is true here. That takes a good dosage of arguments. Go ahead and make your case. The future of AAU is in your hands and show me that you’re better equipped and more capable of leading such an institution as the AAU. Forget Andreas for AAU is not identical with one person be that person Andreas or whoever.

Waiting to hear from such fellow Ethiopians.

Cheers,

A/V

Warning to all members of Addis Ababa University,

Dear All,

This is to forewarn you that a dangerous shark is working day and night amongst you as a TPLF spy.

His name is Ato Abebaw Ayalew. He is an academic staff member of the Department of History Education within the Faculty of Education in Addis Ababa University.

Ato Abebaw has established a great deal of notoreity for beating up a blind student of the Department over registration issues in February of 2007. He had earlier on forbidden this blind student to tape record his lectures in class.

More recently, Ato Abebaw Ayalew is known to have infiltrated, as the TPLF insider informat, a group of well-meaning Ethiopians in the French Legation area of Addis Ababa who were trying to organise fund raising activities for a vehicle award ceremony for the Vice President of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party (CUDP).

Ato Abebaw Ayalew is an Agew (Libu-Zetegn) who comes from Kosso Ber in Gojjam.

It should be recalled that Ato Abebaw Ayalew has been serving the TPLF Governmnet as a spy from his student days at Addis Ababa University. Ato Abebaw Ayalew played a crucial role as a TPLF spy in the quashing of the student movement at Addis Ababa University in 1996/7 University students led by those from Gojjam staged a revolt against the Government's exclusion of opposition elements in the land redistribution of Eastern Gojjam.

I can confirm with absolute confidence and beyond any reasonable doubt that Ato Abebaw Ayalew has all along been, and still, is a member of the Woyane wing of the Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM) cell within Addis Ababa University. He has been acting as a double agent for the TPLF cadres within the University.

Many members of Addis Ababa University's community know this to be a fact pretty well, that Ato Abebaw Ayalew is indeed a double agent.

Many people would recall reading through a piece in April 2005 in Genanaw, one of the then private newspapers, an interview in which Ato Abebaw pretended to be a member of the CUDP.

The Woyane have infiltrated the organisers for the vehicle award ceremony to W/t Birtukan Mideksa, the Vice Chairman of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party. That Ato Abebaw was arrested together with the other organisers is of course to dupe the others. That they have all been released so soon is also perhaps an indication that TPLF had one of its spies arrested and he needed to be freed at the earliest possible time.

Thank you for the article. I agree.
But not only at the higher level, there are also individuals at the faculty level who are killing the University and collecting money.

Have you been to the Faculty of education? Try to see the dean, and heads in the department of psychology and special needs education (his followers). No one knows yest but he is abusing the university.

I read this post when it first came out, and I thought I would comment to bring some clarity and correction to some of the statements and comments made (hopefully, someone is still reading this).

CORRECTION #1:

A J.D., or Juris Doctorate, IS NOT the equivalent of an L.L.B, but rather the equivalent of the old European "Doctor of Laws" degree. It is the highest degree attainable in the legal profession and is the generally accepted prerequisite for professorship at a law school.

CORRECTION #2:

An MFA, or Master of Fine Arts, degree (such as that held by Abiy Ford) is the terminal degree for many artistic disciplines. It is the generally accepted prerequisite for professorship at a art school or arts department within a university.

CORRECTION #3

Although much can be rightly criticized about Andreas Eshete's leadership, the fact that he did not receive tenure or had an unimpressive publishing record is beside the point. Being a university president is an administrative position, not a scholarly one, and his presidency should be judged on solely on his administrative accomplishments.

When universities in the U.S. look for a president, they do not analyze the content of their published papers as much as they look for someone who can raise money, successfully motivate a large number of professionals, and raise the public image of the school. A medical school in Virginia, for example, recently appointed a man with no medical background to engineer a successful turnaround of the insitution.

Lastly, to respond to A/V, there are many who care about the future of AAU and who are committed to doing something about it. Here is my five-point plan for reviving th university, for what it's worth:

1) Bring in a new president with impeccable integrity who has experience managing large-scale projects and organizations. This new president's first job will be to restore (and set in stone) the political independence of AAU.

2) Emphasize math, science and engineering education. Follow the model of the Indian Institutes of Technology to create a pool of technical talent in Ethiopia that can become a driver of economic development that is independent of the agricultural sector.

3) Invest heavily in the Institute of Ethiopian Studies. Ethiopia's unique history and culture are an untapped goldmine of economic benefit for the nation. The IES, as a repository of Ethiopia's national heritage, could serve as a catalyst for growth in culture-related industries (such as design, media and tourism). A new, world-class IES museum could pay for itself within five years.

4) Set up a program to give research and teaching fellowships for up to 500 Ethiopian academics in the diaspora. Local profs will resent this, but it is the easiest way to quickly bring the quality of instruction and research up to world-class standards.

High-profile professors, such as Ephraim Isaac of Princeton and Lema Wolde Senbet of the University of Marylad, should be offered special tenured fellowship positions that allow them to be permanently affiliated with AAU.

5) Invest at least $100 million in bringing the medical school and Black Lion hospital up to international standards. The hospital could set up a couple of special private wings to generate revenue (and stop so many Ethiopians from going abroad for medical care).

Correctiion to CORRECTION #1:
A certain moron wrote the following:
"A J.D., or Juris Doctorate, IS NOT the equivalent of an L.L.B, but rather the equivalent of the old European "Doctor of Laws" degree. It is the highest degree attainable in the legal profession and is the generally accepted prerequisite for professorship at a law school."

Beleive me this is totally not true.

J.D. is not the highest degree attainable in the legal profession. You have Master of Laws (LL.M.) and SJD/LLD/JSD Doctor of Laws dergrees.

J.D. is the FIRST degree in the legal profession. In many law schools, LLM and JSD/LLD are becoming requirments to teach.

please do not lie

I found this on the AAU alumni website, and I wanted to know if there was a good outcome from the workshop?

........................
April 24, 2008

To:
Dear Colleagues:
I am writing to invite you to take part in a major initiative in higher education in Ethiopia. The overall objective of the Strategic Plan of Addis Ababa University (AAU) is to produce 5,000 PhD graduates over the next 10 years, and to establish some 14 Centers of Excellence in research and teaching in key prioritized areas. Achieving this goal will require a radical and innovative approach. Since MA/MSc holders are the great majority of academic staff in public and private universities in Ethiopia, the launching of this large-scale PhD initiative is imperative.

This letter includes a brief background of higher education in Ethiopia, a summary of the strategic planning and initiative for PhD programs in Ethiopia, and an invitation to attend an International Workshop on June 19-21, 2008. This historic meeting will be held at a new university campus completely dedicated to PhD programs in Ethiopia.

Brief Background of Higher Education in Ethiopia. Higher education in Ethiopia started with the founding of Addis Ababa University (AAU) in 1950. With its several colleges in the various regions, AAU remained as the only higher learning institution in Ethiopia for over forty years. Over the last decade, however, fundamental changes have been taking place in higher education in Ethiopia. Some of the former colleges under AAU were upgraded to full-fledged and independent universities, and 11 new universities are being established. This brings the total number of universities in the country to 22. As a result, enrollment to higher education has increased significantly.

With the expansion of higher education in Ethiopia, AAU has been entrusted with the critical task of providing highly trained PhD graduates for itself and the other universities. To this end, AAU has shifted its mission from being a primarily undergraduate/teaching institution to research/graduate training university.

In terms of graduate education, graduate programs started at AAU in 1978. Over the last thirty years, a total of about 9200 students graduated from the School of Graduate Studies, of which only 66 (<1%) were PhDs, and 60% of the recipients of graduate degrees graduated in the last three years because of AAUÕs recent efforts to expand graduate education. Thus, graduate enrollment has increased from a few hundred students to several thousands. Graduate student enrollment is currently at 6,000 students, and by the year 2010, the projected intake is expected to increase to 12,000. At present, there are a total of 146 graduate programs (94 Masters, 27 PhD, 14 Clinical Specialty Certificate, 1 Clinical Specialty Diploma, 1 Postgraduate Certificate and 1 Postgraduate Diploma) at AAU. Of the 27 PhD programs, 15 of them have begun in just the last year!

At present, among the difficulties that the higher education system is facing, the shortage of qualified academic staff is the most important. In order to qualify as a university, the Higher Education Proclamation (N0 351/2003) of Ethiopia stipulates that at least 30% of the faculty should be PhD holders among the academic staff. Even at Addis Ababa University that can claim the best-trained educators, PhD holders count for less than 25% of its Ethiopian academic staff. Addis Ababa University can only meet the 30% requirement through the employment of expatriate staff, and the recognition of MD and special certificate holders equivalent to PhD holders. The situation is even more dismal in the newly established universities. As of today, the need for of qualified PhD holders in public universities alone is estimated to be around 3,000. Recruiting expatriate staff from different countries on a contractual basis cannot bridge this gap because EthiopiaÕs ability to attract highly qualified and experienced expatriate staff from the international labor market remains a major difficulty due to international competition.

Strategies adopted by Ethiopia to develop its human resources at the PhD level in the past focused either on sending graduate students abroad for full-time academic programs, or using the ÒsandwichÓ model, with degrees offered jointly by AAU and foreign universities, with students taking all or part of their coursework in other countries. These two models of graduate and doctoral education have produced only a very limited number of the qualified staff needed by the country. These approaches have severe limitations; both are costly and moreover, after completing their studies a significant number of graduate degree holders fail to return to Ethiopia. Thus, AAU is assuming the responsibility for graduate education in Ethiopia, thereby strengthening the overall higher education capacity of the country!

Strategic Planning and the Initiative for PhD Programs in Ethiopia. At Addis Ababa University, officials have been working for several years to develop this idea. AAU formulated its five year Strategic Plan during 2006/07. This strategic planning process was comprehensive. It consisted of a series of consultative meetings with students, academic and administrative staff. Important academic, research and administrative issues were identified and analyzed. Stakeholders representing government, private sector, and international institutions were consulted during the strategic planning process. The draft plan was enriched through these discussions and recommendations have been incorporated in the final document.

The University's Strategic Plan clearly indicates that the major option for national capacity building to produce highly qualified human resources—both in quality and in numbers—is launching local PhD programs at a large-scale at AAU. Moreover, the approach used at AAU during the last three years in the expansion of graduate education at the MA/MSc level, should also be replicated at the PhD level. Addis Ababa University is designated as the most suitable national institution to accomplish this task because of its recent but ample experience in developing new postgraduate programs, research, and international relations with several leading universities around the world.

As previously noted, the overall objective of the Strategic Plan of the University is to produce 5,000 PhD graduates in 10 years, and to establish some 14 Centers of Excellence in research and teaching in key prioritized areas. Our vision has been articulated as ÒAAU Aspires to be a Preeminent African Research University.Ó To realize this vision, AAU will develop and offer graduate programs, especially PhD programs covering all relevant fields. This will include disciplinary as well as multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary programs. And, in so doing, AAU will link its PhD programs to areas of thematic research. During the plan period—that is, over the next 5 years—the number of PhD programs is to increase to about 85 (about 65 disciplinary-based and about 20 transdisciplinary PhD programs).

With such an expansion of programs, there is a concern that the quality might be compromised. According the Higher Education Relevance and Quality Assurance Agency (HERQA) of Ethiopia, all higher education institutes need to perform an internal quality audit. AAU is to undertake such an internal self assessment, as per pre-specified guidelines developed by the Agency. Another attempt to ensure the quality of the proposed academic programs is the development of Academic Development Resource Centers (ADRCs) in all higher education institutes. These units will provide instructional and other pedagogic skills for faculty. In addition, they will establish benchmarks for quality, to which all academic programs need to adhere. A continuous monitoring and evaluation of all new and old programs will be made to ensure the quality of programs and candidates. At the same time, realizing its own limitations to run the envisaged in-house PhD programs, AAU is attempting to bridge the gap in faculty shortage by facilitating various faculty recruitment schemes such as joint-appointments; employing expatriate staff; visiting scholars; staff-exchange from partner institutes; and forming consortia among colleges and universities outside of Ethiopia.

International Consortia for PhD Programs in Ethiopia. The development of international consortia for PhD programs in Ethiopia is a major part of the overall strategy, and one that will, in many ways, shape the ability of AAU to rapidly expand its graduate programs and research. The capacity of the international consortia will be developed through partnerships and networking with universities throughout the world based on areas of mutual interest that may exist between AAU and its Strategic Plan and universities outside of Ethiopia.

The consortiaÕs role is multifaceted. This may include offering joint PhD degrees; provision of international faculty services through Òblock teachingÓ of PhD courses in one-month segments; distance teaching; short-term intensive seminars; advising/co-advising of doctoral dissertations; access to facilities of higher education outside of Ethiopia for PhD students (e-library, laboratory, etc); and facilitating short-term exposure to their universities for PhD candidates from Ethiopia.

To start the development of the international consortia component of AAUÕs strategic initiative, AAU will convene an international workshop. The workshop aims to achieve the following six major objectives:

1) Develop consortia for each academic track (Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, Science and Technology, Development Studies, Administration Sciences, Art and Design Studies, etc;

2) Discuss collectively among members of consortia the identification of common research areas;

3) Identify the comparative advantage for each institution engaged in the consortia;

4) Develop working and management modalities of the consortia;

5) Comment and refine draft PhD curricula and plan new PhD curricula to be developed (PhD curriculum already developed by AAU faculty will be sent prior to the workshop);

6) Plan the next five years of major engagements of each partner institution (faculty availabilities in block teaching or other modalities, advising PhD students, defining research tracks for PhD students, mapping available resources for advising PhD students, identifying new members to strengthen the consortia, and so on).

As one of the leading academic/research institute/major partner/international organization with a longstanding partnership with Addis Ababa University—or as a new potential partner for consortia development through AAUÕs large-scale PhD program initiative—we cordially invite you to send your delegate(s) to the International Workshop to be held in Addis Ababa from 19th to 21st June 2008.

Prof. Andreas EshetŽ

President

Please note that AAU will cover the total local costs of participants, and extends other forms of support as required.

The workshop venue will be in the New Campus of AAU at Akaki which is dedicated to the PhD programs of Addis Ababa University.

Hi
Very nice and intrestingss story.

However, the banking Internet sector has exploded in the past five years.

With the popularity of the Internet and the power it gives people to take control of their lives, many traditional banks have created banking Internet web pages where customers could transfer money, set up bill payments recurring or otherwise, quickly check items that have cleared, and many other functions that can be accessed 24 hours per day 7 days a week.

Banking Internet options also include virtual banks.

This is amazing and makes traveling a lot less stressful as well because with banking Internet you always know where your account stands.
Internet Banking
Times are changing, with the internet redefining the banking sector over the last five years. Do not be confused as it continues to develop, the many names it goes by all mean the same thing electronic, online and PC banking are all just synonyms traditional banking services provided through a secure internet portal.

Traditional banks have monitored the popularity and growth of the internet, and realising customers wanted greater control of their affairs, have created their own internet banking web sites.

These banks, and all other internet banking continue to grow in popularity because they are convenient, saving customers time and money.

Internet banking has revolutionalized banking with immediate global access to your bank accounts using a secure internet connection.

If you’re like me when you first saw the term “arbitrage sports betting” you just said, “huh?” You may even be reading this article because you were wondering. It is a relatively little method that can actually allow you to make money no matter who wins or loses. Kind of like heads I win, tails I win!
bet football | bet online sport betting
The best sports betting odds are in actuality just numbers, they may be an ever changing set of numbers but just numbers nonetheless. There are many different factors involved in the computation of not the least of which is the number of bettors placing bets on one team. If a bookie sees this happening he will give the team that is dentified as the loser more points and take points from the team deemed the winning team.
sport bet
For quite some time the United States House of Representatives has been trying to pass a bill that will make it much more difficult for people to get away with breaking the online gambling laws. Not to mention stricter penalties for those who are caught.

The problem is, most people wouldn't know where to begin if they had to devise their own worthwhile Selection System, and those clever enough to be able to do so simply wouldn't have the time to do it (it is an arduous task). In fact, there are only two groups of people who do bother to spend the time and money to do so properly: (i) Bookies and (ii) sports tipsters. However, while you can be 100% sure that all Bookies operate a good Selection System (but they won't share it with you), you can be sure that 99% of so-called expert tipsters don't. The number of tipsters doing a proper job on the Internet can probably be counted on the fingers of just two hands.
